The COVID-19 pandemic has caused public officials to have to make difficult decisions regarding local events. One such difficult decision was made recently about Mardi Gras in Mandeville/St. Tammany. Another difficult decision has been made to cancel both the Old Mandeville Business Association sponsored Christmas Past Festival and the Mandeville Market Extended Holiday Hours events. These events have historically drawn large crowds as both are highly anticipated and successful events.
We share your feelings of frustration and disappointment. According to information provided by St. Tammany Parish Coroner’s office/State Department of Health, case numbers in St. Tammany continue to trend upward. Mass gatherings make social distancing difficult.
History has shown that pandemics eventually taper off. When that happens, we know our festivals and other events will be an important part of our recovery and we look forward to that time. We have had preliminary conversations with the Old Mandeville Business Association about the possibility of a “Christmas In Spring” event. In the meantime, we encourage everyone to “Get Wrapped Up In Mandeville” and support our local businesses, while adhering to proper social distancing and “Mask Up Mandeville” protocols.
2020 has been quite a year. We appreciate your patience and understanding. We look forward to brighter days ahead when we can resume our normal calendar of special events and we can be together as a community to celebrate all that makes Mandeville the special place it is!
