This 6,000 sq. ft. facility was opened in January 1996. The building was the site of the former U.S. Post Office for the City of Mandeville. Mandeville's unprecedented growth caused the U.S. Post office to consider a larger structure in the early 1990s. Once the new U.S. Post Office building was ready for occupancy in late 1995, plans were begun for the renovation of the previously existing site. Former Mayor Paul Spitzfaden was instrumental in the Community Center concept. The result was the creation of the Community Center, which is across the street from City Hall.
The center has a lounge which contains the reading center, a television set and a card table. There is an exercise room equipped with hydraulic resistance and cardio equipment. Numerous activities are available such as line dancing, yoga, tai-chi, art classes, ceramics, meditation, table tennis, bridge card games and health awareness classes. Three senior clubs hold meetings and socials once a month and they are AARP, New Image Club, Mandeville Senior Citizens. New Image Club offers bingo for a nominal yearly membership fee of $8.00. Lunch and transportation are available for seniors from the Council on Aging. Call (985) 624-4659 if you would like their services.
When the facility is not being used by the seniors, approximately 5,000 sq. ft. of open area is available for public rental for non-profit meetings or social functions. This includes Monday through Friday after 6 p.m. and all day Saturday and Sunday. Rental fees vary, and are dependent upon the day and length of time desired.
